Nicholas J. Vogelzang is the Fred C. Buffett Professor of Medicine and Chair in Genitourinary Oncology. He is also Professor of Surgery (Urology) and the Ben May Institute for Cancer Research at the University of Chicago. He was appointed the Director of the University of Chicago Cancer Research Center in July, 1999.

Dr. Vogelzang has served on numerous committees of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, as well as on its Board of Directors from 1993 to 1996. He is a former president of the Illinois Division of the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Vogelzang was the principal investigator at the University of Chicago for Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) from 1988 to 1999, Chair of the CALGB Prostate Committee from 1993 to 1999 and is the current principal investigator of the University of Chicago Cancer Center Support Grant. He is a member of many professional societies, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Urological Association, the Society of Urologic Oncology and the European Society for Medical Oncology.

Dr. Vogelzang serves on the Editorial Board of Seminars in Oncology, has served on the boards of Cancer, Cancer Research, The Prostate Journal, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and is a reviewer for numerous other journals. He is the author of over 340 scientific publications (including peer-reviewed papers, internet publications, reviews, book chapters and books), over 300 abstracts and letters, and has given over 260 scientific articles, abstracts and reviews. As a survivor of Hodgkin's Disease, he is a sought after public speaker. He is the lead editor of the Comprehensive Textbook of Genitourinary Oncology, the second edition of which was published in January, 2000.

Dr. Vogelzang received his M.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1974. He completed his internship, residency, and chief residency in internal medicine at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, followed by his fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He has been a faculty member at the University of Chicago since 1982.

Dr. Vogelzang's major interests are in clinical trials in genitourinary malignancies and mesothelioma. He is a recognized expert in new therapies for patients with metastatic kidney cancer, including genetic therapy, new cytokine therapy, and combination cytokine therapy. He also conducts large-scale national trials in the field of prostate cancer.

Dr. Vogelzang was born in Holland, Michigan. He has been married for 31 years to his wife, Jeanne Vogelzang, J.D., M.B.A., who is the Executive Director of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) and a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School. Together they have three children and one grandchild. Their oldest son, Nicholas, is a graduate of St. Louis University School of Law and is employed at the firm of Richardson, Patrick, Westbrook & Brickman in South Carolina. Their second son, Adam, is a graduate of George Washington University and is employed as a defense technical analyst with GRC International in Virginia. Their youngest son, Timothy, is a recent graduate of Calvin College in Michigan. When Dr. Vogelzang is not working, he enjoys visiting his granddaughter, golfing and spending time at his lake home with his family.
