Asbestos Exposure Site List
While most people come into contact with asbestos at some point in their lives, many usually do not become ill from minimal exposure. However, individuals who are exposed to the material on a daily basis, usually through workplace exposure or significant environmental contact, have an increased chance of developing asbestos-related diseases.
Asbestos, the only known cause of mesothelioma cancer, was used for decades in jobsites throughout the country. Many asbestos exposure sites fall under the following categories:
- Power Plants
- Shipyards
- Chemical Plants
- Refineries
Other employees at risk for developing asbestos-related diseases include mining, milling, drywall, auto, demolition, construction and asbestos manufacturing workers. Because of government regulations, today's workers who have no history of asbestos exposure face less of a risk than past employees.
The chance of developing mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis varies with the type of industry and degree of the exposure. Although studies show that people exposed to high levels of asbestos for a prolong period of time have a greater chance of developing asbestos-related diseases, individuals with only brief exposure have also developed these illnesses. Studies have also indicated that employees who handle asbestos put their families at risk, as asbestos fibers can be carried home on the worker's hair, skin and clothing.
If you worked in or around an asbestos site or lived close to one, you may have been exposed to asbestos. Even a small amount of asbestos fibers can cause serious lung damage, including asbestosis, asbestos lung cancer, and mesothelioma. Speak to your doctor if you are concerned about possible asbestos exposure at sites in the past.
